What a walk-at-home workout actually is

If you have never done one: you stand in a clear patch of floor, roughly the size of a bath mat, and you walk on the spot. Forward two steps, back two steps, side to side, knees lifting, arms moving. Lumi counts you through it. Twenty minutes later you have covered two or three thousand steps without leaving the room, without a treadmill, and without anyone watching.

It sounds too simple to be exercise. It is not. Walking on the spot at a decent clip puts you squarely in the moderate-intensity band that health guidance keeps pointing at — the same band as a brisk outdoor walk — and because you are adding arm work, knee lifts and direction changes, you are also asking your balance and your core to show up. The difference is that indoors there is no ice, no hills you did not agree to, no dogs, and no weather that cancels your plans.

How to pick the right video today

Start with time, not ambition. If you have fifteen minutes, take a fifteen-minute workout and finish it, rather than starting a forty-five and quitting at twelve. Finishing is the thing that builds the habit; intensity can come later. The length pages below sort everything into ten, fifteen, twenty and thirty-minute blocks so you can decide in five seconds.

Then look at the impact. Anything marked no jumping keeps both feet low and is the safer choice if your knees are loud, if you are new to this, or if you live above someone. The gentle and beginner collections go a step further and keep the pace conversational the whole way through.

How often, and how much

Most people do best starting at three sessions a week and adding a fourth when three stops feeling like a decision. If you want a number to aim at, the research on step counts is kinder than the marketing: benefits climb steeply from about 4,000 steps a day and start levelling off nearer 7,500, so you do not need to chase 10,000 to be doing this right. A 30-minute workout here is usually 3,500 to 5,000 steps, which means one video plus your normal day often gets you there.

The workouts are free and they always will be. If you would rather be told which one to do each morning than choose, the free 7-day challenge does exactly that.
