The half-hour walk

30 minute walking workouts done indoors

Half an hour is the sweet spot: long enough to feel like a proper walk, short enough that it still happens on a busy Tuesday. Most of these land between 3,500 and 5,000 steps.

Why thirty minutes is the length that sticks

Thirty minutes of brisk walking, five days a week, is almost exactly the 150 minutes of moderate activity a week that health guidance asks of adults. That is the whole target, met by one video and a pair of trainers. It is also short enough to sit inside the gap between a load of washing and lunch, which is the real reason it works: nothing has to be rearranged to fit it in.

At this length you get a proper structure. Every 30-minute workout in the library opens with three or four minutes of easy marching to warm the joints, builds through intervals where the pace or the arm work steps up, then walks you back down and stretches you out at the end. You are not asked to sprint and you are not left standing still.

What thirty minutes gets you

Expect roughly 3,500 to 5,000 steps depending on the pace of the video — the faster, more intense ones push past 5,000, and the Zone 2 and gentle ones sit nearer 3,500 while keeping your heart rate in the steady, sustainable range. In distance terms that is somewhere between a mile and a half and just over two miles, without a single step outside. If you want your own number rather than an average, the steps to miles calculator works it out from your height.

Making it easier on your knees

If half an hour of walking is more than your knees currently want, you have two good options. Split it: do fifteen minutes in the morning and fifteen after dinner, which counts the same. Or pick a workout tagged no jumping — both feet stay low, there are no jumps and often no squats, and the intensity comes from your arms and your pace instead of from impact.

And if thirty feels ambitious today, that is useful information rather than a failure. Take a twenty, finish it well, and come back to this page tomorrow.
