Walking indoors, without a treadmill

Indoor walking has quietly become the most practical form of cardio there is, and most of it happens without a machine. You march on the spot, step forward and back, travel side to side, add knee lifts and arm work, and follow a video that keeps the rhythm for you. The floor space required is genuinely about a metre square. A rug, the end of a bed, the strip between the sofa and the telly — all of it works.

The reasons people move indoors are rarely about preference. It is dark by half four in winter. The pavements are icy. The area is not comfortable to walk alone in. There is someone at home you cannot leave. A treadmill costs money and takes up a room you do not have. None of those things need to end your walking.

Is it as good as walking outside?

For your heart, close enough that the difference does not matter. Moderate-intensity movement is moderate-intensity movement, and a brisk indoor walking workout with arm work will often push your heart rate higher than an amble round the block. What indoors loses is daylight, fresh air and changing scenery, which are real benefits — so if you can get outside as well, do. Think of these videos as the reliable floor under your week, not as a replacement for a nice walk on a nice day.

What indoors adds: no traffic, no weather, no hills you did not choose, a soft floor rather than concrete, and a structured session with a warm-up and a cooldown built in. For knees and hips, that combination is usually kinder than pavement.

Living above someone, or with thin walls

Choose anything tagged no jumping. Both feet stay low, the intensity comes from pace and arms rather than impact, and the noise is closer to walking across a room than to a workout class. Wear trainers rather than going barefoot — it protects your knees and quietens each step. And if you are on a hard floor, a yoga mat or rug under you makes a noticeable difference to both.
