How many steps is a walking workout?
Most answers to this question are guesses. These numbers come from counting: every workout in the Glow Walk Club library that has a measured step count, grouped by length.
A 30-minute indoor walking workout gets you about 3,750 steps (most land between 3,000 and 5,000). Twenty minutes is about 2,500, fifteen about 1,800, and ten about 1,200. The typical pace is 125 steps per minute, which is comfortably moderate-intensity exercise.
Steps by workout length
Each row is the median of the real step counts for workouts of that length. The range shows where the middle 80% fall: the low end is a gentle or strength-focused session, the high end a fast, high-knee one.
| Length | Typical steps | Range | Pace (steps/min) | Workouts measured | Most-watched |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 min | 1,200 | 500–1,400 | 120 | 9 | Watch |
| 15 min | 1,800 | 1,200–2,000 | 120 | 19 | Watch |
| 20 min | 2,500 | 2,000–2,700 | 125 | 53 | Watch |
| 30 min | 3,750 | 3,000–5,000 | 127 | 75 | Watch |
| 45 min | 5,000 | 5,000–6,000 | 130 | 34 | Watch |
| 60 min | 7,500 | 7,300–10,000 | 136 | 14 | Watch |
Why the pace matters more than the minutes
Researchers measure walking intensity by cadence: how many steps you take a minute. In the CADENCE-Adults study, about 100 steps per minute marked the start of moderate intensity for adults, the level the 150-minutes-a-week guideline asks for. The median workout in this library runs at 125 steps a minute; the steadiest tenth sit near 113 and the fastest tenth push past 167. So almost every session counts as real exercise, not just "moving about".
That is also why two 30-minute workouts can differ by 1,500 steps. A dance or interval session with quick feet piles up steps; a toning session with arm work and pauses for squats piles up fewer, but works muscles a plain walk does not.
How far is that?
At an average woman's stride (about 2,400 steps to the mile), a typical 30-minute workout covers roughly 1.6 miles, about 2.6 km. Your own stride depends on your height: the steps to miles calculator works it out exactly.
How many steps do you actually need?
Fewer than 10,000. A 2022 meta-analysis of 15 studies found the drop in early-death risk levelled off at about 6,000–8,000 steps a day for adults over 60 and 8,000–10,000 for younger adults. A study of older women found benefits starting around 4,400 steps and levelling off near 7,500. One 30-minute workout plus an ordinary day of moving around usually gets you into that range.
Do steps in place count?
Yes. A step is a step to your heart, your muscles and your tracker. If you wear a watch, keep your arms swinging naturally so the wrist sensor picks up the rhythm; a phone in your pocket counts reliably either way. More in does walking in place count as walking?
Common questions
How many steps is a 30-minute walking workout?
About 3,750 steps, measured across 75 30-minute indoor walking workouts. Most fall between 3,000 and 5,000, depending on pace.
How many steps is a 20-minute walking workout?
About 2,500 steps, usually between 2,000 and 2,700.
How many steps per minute is walking in place?
The median across 216 measured indoor walking workouts is 125 steps per minute. About 100 steps per minute is the research threshold for moderate intensity.
Can I get 10,000 steps from a walking workout?
Yes. Several workouts in the library are built to hit 10,000 steps in 70–80 minutes, or you can stack shorter ones across the day. How to get 10,000 steps at home →
