Indoor vs outdoor

Does walking in place count as walking?

It feels like cheating. It is not. Here is what changes when you walk in your living room instead of round the block, and what does not.

Short answer

Yes. Your heart, muscles and step tracker respond to how fast your feet move, not whether you go anywhere. At about 100 steps a minute or more, walking in place is moderate-intensity exercise, the same category as a brisk outdoor walk; follow-along workouts typically run at 125 steps a minute. What you lose is fresh air, daylight and uneven ground; what you gain is no weather, no hills, and no excuses.

What is the same

  • Steps. A pedometer, phone or watch counts each footfall, indoors or out.
  • Intensity. Exercise scientists grade walking by cadence (steps per minute). Around 100 steps a minute is the threshold for moderate intensity, whether you travel or not.
  • The guideline. The WHO's 150 minutes of moderate activity a week does not specify where. Thirty minutes of brisk walking in place, five days a week, meets it.

What is different

  • No forward push. Plain marching on the spot uses your calves and hamstrings less than striding forward. Good walking workouts fix this with steps forward and back, side steps, knee lifts and heel digs.
  • No terrain. Flat floor means no hills to raise your heart rate, but also no curbs or ice to trip on. For many people over 50, that trade is the whole point.
  • No daylight. Morning light outdoors helps sleep and mood. If you walk indoors, open the curtains, or walk by a window.

How to make it as good as an outdoor walk

  1. Keep the cadence up: aim for 100+ steps a minute. Following a video does this for you; the library's median is 125.
  2. Move in every direction. Travelling two steps forward and back works the same muscles as walking ahead.
  3. Swing your arms. It raises your heart rate and helps a wrist tracker count accurately.
  4. Lift your knees on some sets. Higher knees mean more work per step and a stronger core.

Will my watch count the steps?

Usually yes. Phones in a pocket are very reliable. Wrist trackers count from arm movement, so they can under-count if you hold your arms still (pushing a pram, holding weights) and occasionally over-count during arm-heavy moves. Over a whole workout it evens out well enough for daily goals.

Calories

Calorie burn follows intensity and body weight. Brisk walking is about 3.5 METs; for a 70 kg (154 lb) woman that is roughly 120 calories in 30 minutes, more for faster or longer sessions. The walking calorie calculator gives your own number.

Common questions

Is walking in place as good as walking outside?

For heart health and step goals, nearly. At the same cadence it is the same intensity. Adding forward-back and side steps covers the muscles that walking ahead uses.

How many calories does walking in place burn?

Roughly 100–150 calories in 30 minutes for a 70 kg person at a brisk pace (about 3.5 METs). Faster workouts with high knees burn more.

Does walking in place count toward 10,000 steps?

Yes. Every step registers on a phone or tracker the same way.
